Happy Sunday, and welcome to a new edition of “This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away“. We are barely 10 days away from the release of a new anime Star Wars series, in the Visions spin-off The Ninth Jedi. But today, it’s a SDCC-themed edition of this column, as I’ll be recapping everything that happened at the convention, from direct Star Wars announcements to other news that may have Star Wars implications.
Before we get to that, let me plug Thursday’s fun conversation on SWNN Live!, where I joined Tom and Tyler to discuss the lasting implications of The Rise of Skywalker‘s release over the franchise. Three Things That May Have Flown Casual (San Diego Comic-Con Edition)
Gaming news: We got a few tidbits from Zero Company throughout the week. Bit Reactor recently hosted a Q&A on Discord, and published the highlights online — we recapped them here. The game was also featured at an SDCC panel, where the collector’s edition was announced, and the first theme from the score was released. Zero Company comes out a month from now.
More details on the museum: We learned a few days ago that there will be a traveling Star Wars-themed museum that will open its doors in Philadelphia next year. At SDCC, we learned that this will be the first city of several in North America the exhibition will visit over five years. They will be in Philly between February and September.
Publishing updates: The SDCC panels also brought a lot of news for comics and upcoming novels — most importantly, a new novel titled Star Wars: Twin Crossroads by Beth Ravis, which follows Luke and Leia after Return of the Jedi and will feature Leia’s training. In time for the 50th anniversary, we’ll also get audiobooks of the original trilogy novelizations, along with a new nonfiction book from Anthony Breznican and Pablo Hidalgo titled Star Wars: A Celebration. There were also plenty of comics announcements, including a Phineas and Ferb crossover, which you can check out here.
This Week, In Star Wars-Adjacent News
By now, you may have already seen that Ryan Gosling will officially be Ghost Rider in an upcoming Marvel Studios movie. The interesting part for this column, though, is who he’s teaming up with. As announced at the Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Gosling will star in a 2028 movie directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper — precisely the trio behind Star Wars: Starfighter, which comes out next year.
The logical conclusion here is that Disney is pretty happy with how Starfighter turned out, so much so that they got the band back together. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also said during the Hall H panel that he’s seen the new movie and loved it. So there is a lot of reason for optimism for Star Wars fans. But to me, my main read comes from the other side: it feels to me like Gosling was so happy with Shawn Levy on the set of the movie that when he got the call to make a Ghost Rider movie, he had just the man for the job.
Pretty much everyone involved in or who has seen Starfighter is singing its praises — and though I’m not putting too much weight on that just yet, it’s at least nice to hear. With just a few more weeks to go until D23, where footage from the film may be shown publicly for the first time, things are looking quite well for the project now. I would expect the first trailer to play before Avengers. Doomsday and Dune: Part Three in December.
I did have another thought, though: I guess there will not be a Starfighter sequel anytime soon, right?
