The couple hope to welcome customers back to the Kings Head, in Bridge Street, Appleby, on July 31 after almost three months of work.
Chris said the building, which has been closed since 2022, had required extensive repairs and refurbishment before it could reopen.
He said: “It was a bit of a mess. It had been left and nothing had been touched for years.
“Everything needed doing. The water needed changing, the electricity needed changing – everything.”
A new cellar system is among the final jobs being completed ahead of the planned opening.
The couple have retained the pub’s historic character including its Georgian windows, high ceilings and an ornate mirror with a carved frame which has stood inside the building for generations.

Chris said: “A lot of it is listed so it still has all those beautiful features. It’s a beautiful building.”
Chris and Rachel have more than 30 years experience in hospitality and also own Sam’s Bar, a cocktail lounge in Sunderland.
A manager will oversee their Sunderland venue while the couple concentrate on the Kings Head, where they expect to be regularly seen behind the bar.
Rather than competing directly with Appleby’s existing offerings, Chris said: “There are other pubs in the town which are foodie places and lovely country pubs, and we just wanted to bring something a bit different.
“We’ll still have nice beers, wines and cocktails, but it won’t be the same as the other pubs.”
Food will not initially be served.
The couple have known Appleby for years, having owned a lodge near the town for around a decade.
Asked why they had chosen Appleby, he said: “Because we love it. It’s a beautiful town.”
The Kings Head will initially open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, before moving towards opening throughout the week once the business is established.
Live music is planned from 6.30pm on Saturday as part of the opening weekend.
The pub also has a beer garden and dartboard while the couple said they would consider installing a pool table if there was enough interest in forming a team.
Chris said the response from residents had been encouraging.
He said: “Everybody seems quite pleased just to get the place open. We’re looking forward to seeing people’s reaction when they walk in.”
A function room is also expected to become available for free hire from the end of September.
Announcing their opening plans, Chris and Rachel joked: “The Royal family will be opening the doors this Friday – all being well.
“We’re looking forward to seeing you. Hopefully you’ll like it.”
