Losing a parent comes with unimaginable pain, and seeing headlines about it on a national level likely adds another layer of emotions. Nevertheless, after keeping her passing private for weeks, new details have emerged about the death of Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck’s mother, Chris Affleck, including where she spent her final moments.

Chris died on June 2 at the age of 83 following a battle with pancreatic cancer. According to her death certificate, obtained by Us Weekly, her immediate cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest, with pancreatic adenocarcinoma listed as an underlying condition. She had been living with the disease for months.

The document also reveals that Chris died while “visiting son’s residence” at 10:52 a.m. The address listed on the certificate is connected to Ben, meaning the longtime educator spent her final moments at her son’s home.

The timing of her death comes with a bittersweet detail. Just two days earlier, Chris had fulfilled what her family described as her greatest wish following her cancer diagnosis when she watched Samuel graduate from middle school.

Chris was diagnosed in December 2025 and initially given six months to live, according to her obituary published in The Boston Globe.

“Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school,” the obituary read. “She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.”

Her death wasn’t publicly announced until July 24, nearly two months after the family privately said goodbye.

While Chris became known to the public as the mother of two Academy Award-winning sons, her own life extended far beyond Hollywood.

Before Ben and Casey became famous, she raised them with their father, Timothy Affleck, and worked as a teacher. Her obituary also reflected a lifelong commitment to activism that stretched back decades.

During Freedom Summer, she taught literacy classes in Mississippi, later protested the Vietnam War and embraced the counterculture movement of the 1960s.

Decades later, she volunteered on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and became involved with advocacy surrounding water justice in Palestine after traveling to the region in 2009.

She also helped establish the Sustainable Cape project in Truro, Massachusetts, and remained interested in activism through younger generations.

When her granddaughter’s student activist group needed somewhere to hold training sessions, Chris reportedly opened her Truro home to them, and sat through the workshops herself, taking notes.

Still, it was her five grandchildren who became the center of her later years. Her obituary described them as “the animating force of her last two decades,” adding that while she was proud of what her family accomplished, she particularly enjoyed watching them “questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority.”

Chris also had a touching relationship with her ex-sister-in-law. Although Ben and Jennifer Garner separated in 2015 and finalized their divorce in 2018, Garner’s relationship with her former mother-in-law continued over the years.

Chris was regularly photographed with Garner and her grandchildren, Violet, Fin and Samuel, from when the kids were little through their teenage years.

She attended their activities, spent holidays with the family and remained part of their lives even as Ben and Garner moved forward separately.

During a particularly difficult period for Ben in 2018, Chris reportedly stayed with Garner and the children while her son underwent treatment at a rehabilitation facility in Malibu.

For Mother’s Day in 2019, he shared a photo of Garner alongside Chris, calling them “the two incredible mothers who have shown me the meaning of love.”
