Casey Affleck’s eldest son is following in his father’s footsteps.

Indiana, 22, joined the Oscar winner, 51, for a rare appearance at the premiere of their new movie Company during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Casey directed the new movie, which also stars Nick Nolte, Ben Mendelsohn, Adelaide Clemens, Scoot McNairy, Emily Alyn Lind and Caylee Cowan.

Casey’s youngest son, 18-year-old Atticus, also has a role in the gothic mystery movie, but was not present for the premiere. He shares Atticus and Indiana with ex-wife Summer Phoenix.

During a press conference in Venice, the Manchester by the Sea actor called directing his sons one of the “best professional experiences” of his life.

“I think they grew up around it and had some interest in it and a sort of innate understanding of what it was,” Casey said of his children. “Like I did, my dad worked in the theater for many years. And so it’s passed down, I suppose, which is a really nice thing. And they were willing to be a part of this.”

Casey’s older brother, Ben Affleck, also attended the premiere to show support.

Company was written by Casey and Ron Hansen. The film follows a woman who arrives uninvited to a holiday party in 1975 and tells the story of Tom, an aging hermit who rescues a stranded actress during a Colorado blizzard in 1953. To pass the time, the actress shares an older story of a farming couple who take someone in as murders spread in their area.

“As the stories intertwine across generations, Company becomes a meditation on grief, vengeance, forgiveness and the quiet acts of compassion that can heal even the deepest wounds,” per the official synopsis.

Casey called the process of casting his sons for Company “pretty conventional.”

“I was sitting around the house doing read-throughs of this script over and over, and I would have my two kids read the younger and older teens, and they were fantastic,” he said. “I got to the point where I was there in pre-production and I had a cast and film and they were willing to show up and do it.”

According to Casey, even the timing worked out perfectly.

“And I guess the younger one [Atticus] had a spring break from high school of a week or so, and that was kind of all we needed them for,” he continued. “And Indiana, the older one, he showed up and he played this part and stayed every single day and worked in the other departments and shoveled snow and carried light stands around and never complained, or rarely complained.”

“They were amazing, and it made it the best professional experience of my life by far because I got to work every day with my kids and hang around. I would do it over and over again if I could,” the Gone Baby Gone star said.
