Some feel that King Charles III’s letter about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s involvement in the monarchy is not entirely fair.
The 77-year-old king issued a letter earlier this week to senior officials across the U.K. government to inform everyone that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working members of the royal family despite their recent return to Britain.
In it, the letter stated (per People), “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”
However, sources close to Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are pushing back on His Majesty’s words given that the couple is actually quite famous.
“They are public figures,” a source close to the Spare author and the former Suits star told People on Thursday, September 10. “Members of the public know who they are. The idea that they can live a normal, ‘private’ life is sadly not realistic.”
A spokesperson for Harry and Meghan — who made the decision to step down from their senior royal duties in 2020 and move to California — previously told the BBC that the couple was “a little surprised” to not get more of a heads up on the letter before it was made public.
However, according to the Associated Press, the letter stated, “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that (this) information be shared.”
According to People, those close to Harry and Meghan argued that if they actually are “private citizens,” as the king said, the letter wouldn’t have to have been sent by Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the royal household, to other senior officials.
Meghan and Harry shocked the world when it was recently revealed they were moving back to the United Kingdom with the children.
While the couple and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are beginning to settle into their new life, it is unclear where exactly they are living. However, it is widely believed that the Sussexes are residing in the Cotswolds.
It was also revealed this week that, after the letter was sent out, Uganda dropped out of the annual Invictus Games, the international sporting competition that Harry founded in 2014.
