Marvel finally has their answer to the Absolute Universe (and there’s a multi-year plan)
With the runaway success of DC’s Absolute Universe line, it was only a matter of time before Marvel Comics came up with their own version. Launching on October 7, Marvel Midnight is an imprint that reimagines some of Marvel’s most iconic characters through a horror-themed lens. The imprint will launch with Midnight Spider-Man, Midnight Fantastic Four, and Midnight X-Men, but if they’re successful, it’s likely more titles will follow.
Will Marvel Midnight give the publisher the same success DC had with their Absolute Universe? Marvel is certainly banking on it, which is why each of their launch titles has a multi-year plan. “We’re all pitching multi-year plans. I’ve got a 36, 48 [issue], and longer plan,” Midnight X-Men writer Jonathan Hickman says during an interview with Comicbook.com’s Chris Killian.
“I have at least 24 issues mapped out right now,” Midnight Fantastic Four writer Benjamin Percy adds. “And obviously plans to go much longer,” Hickman says. “I don’t want to be dramatic or anything like that, but I’m perfectly happy doing this for a really long time.”
Midnight Spider-Man writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson didn’t share a number, but he indicated that he also has a long-term plan for his title.
If you’ve ever read a Hickman series before, then you know long-term plans are kind of his brand. The question is, will the sales be strong enough for them to see these plans come to fruition? Marvel is betting big on Marvel Midnight, and this October we’ll find out if it will pay off.
