Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell has addressed Earl Spencer’s claims in his memoir Swan Song that King Charles was “giddy like a lottery winner” when he heard the news of Princess Diana’s death.
Appearing on Piers Morgan’s Uncensored show on Tuesday (23 September), Mr Burrell said Charles was “a broken man” when he learned Diana had died.
He said: “I was in Paris. I saw the King. He was a broken man.”
He added: “Clearly, he’d been crying, his eyes were bloodshot… I’d never seen him like that, ever.”
Mr Morgan has vowed to press ahead with suing Earl Spencer despite the author apologising over an error in his controversial memoir.
The earl suggested Mr Morgan was responsible for publishing photographs, taken with hidden cameras, of Diana in a leotard working out at the gym, in the Daily Mirror newspaper in 1993.
But Mr Morgan was working at The Sun at the time, and did not join the Mirror as its editor until 1995.
