Butcher: Invisible Wounds has been nominated in the Sports Documentary of the Year category at the Broadcast Sport Awards 2026.
The film tells a deeply personal story about Mr Butcher’s life, both on and off the pitch.
It explores the impact of military service on families and the experiences of veterans, including those within his own family, with his son Christopher taking his own life following his experiences serving in Afghanistan.

Produced by Sylver Entertainment, the company said it was “incredibly proud” that the film had been recognised.
In a social media post, the company said: “This film was never just about football.
“It follows Terry Butcher, the England captain remembered for that bloodied headband, as he confronts the hidden cost of war on his own family and the veterans he now fights for.”

The company also thanked the Butcher family and the production team, including writer-director Stuart Burley, producer John Grint, executive producer Victoria Barrell, producer Robert Sarre and Paul Hamilton.
The documentary premiered earlier this year prior to the World Cup, and drew interest from football supporters, veterans and military charities alike.
Speaking at the time of its release, Mr Butcher said he hoped the film would raise awareness of the challenges faced by former service personnel after leaving the armed forces.

He has long supported veterans’ causes, being a patron of Combat 2 Coffee, and has used the documentary to highlight the experiences of military families, including members of his own.
The latest nomination marks another achievement for the film and its creators.
For Ipswich Town supporters, the recognition offers another reason to celebrate a documentary that honours one of the club’s greatest-ever players while addressing issues that reach far beyond the football pitch.

Winners of the Broadcast Sport Awards 2026 will be revealed at a ceremony at the Hilton on Park Lane in London on November 5.
Butcher: Invisible Wounds will compete against some of the country’s top sports productions in its category.
The nomination means the story of one of Ipswich Town’s most respected figures is once again in the national spotlight.
