With Clayface a week out and the newly formed Skydance recently behind them, James Gunn and Peter Safran have reaffirmed they’re with the DC Universe for the long haul.
Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Safran teased there’s a “bigger story” they’ve been itching to tell for years. Apparently, being under Paramount now allows for “even more resources” to tell it, along with an “even greater reach that’s really exciting for us.” And since they’re both among those who survived the culling, he couldn’t help but add he was glad David Ellison “invited us to continue.”
Gunn added that Ellison knows “all we wanted to do and what was happening, the secrets, and where the DCU was going.” This also appears to extend beyond 2027’s Man of Tomorrow and the projects set to come after it, announced and otherwise. At the moment, those announced projects are just another Creature Commandos season, The People v. Gorilla Grodd, and 2028’s separate (but still important) The Batman Part II.
As for the present, Safran took the time to talk up Clayface, saying it helps give the DC slate a “tremendous scope of tones and vibes, scales and scopes and budget levels. The fact that we get to make a DC movie that is a pure body horror movie, that is a dream come true.” And even if you don’t know a thing about Clayface, or at least the Matt Hagen version of the character, he said you’ll likely love it just as a horror movie.
Speaking of that movie, though, director James Watkins called the current regime change “outside noise. All that I can do is make the best movie I can, and the rest is out of your control. But I’m excited for the movie. We’ve been getting good responses and I hope it really connects with people.”
