What are you supposed to do when your old boss releases a memoir in which he claims he never wanted to hire you due to vague concerns about your “personal life”? Well, if you’re Anna Faris, you address it with a simple “Yikes.”
On Tuesday, prolific sitcom creator Chuck Lorre released his memoir, creatively titled Sitcom. In it, Lorre wrote about putting together the cast for Mom, which ran from 2013 to 2021. Faris starred as a single mother and recovering addict who forges a new relationship with her own mother (Allison Janney) as they both try to stay sober. According to “Page Six,” Lorre wrote in Sitcom that he “wasn’t sure Anna would be appropriate for this kind of material,” despite the fact that she was CBS’s first choice. He ultimately came to the conclusion that “someone’s personal life is none of my business” and hired Faris.
“As the years went by, it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct,” Lorre wrote. “After six years, she left the show for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.” Lorre did not elucidate what those reasons might have been, but did go on to say that the show “found its true voice” in its final season, the only one without Faris.
On Thursday, Faris addressed Lorre’s comments in an Instagram post, saying that she “didn’t really see that coming” and “of course it hurts.”
“Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted,” Faris wrote. “I’m proud of what we made together, and nothing changes how grateful I am for those people and those years.”
Faris also shared that she has been sober for a year and a half, acknowledging that she was “on a show about recovery and then I lived it.” The actress said that she is now “happier than I’ve been in a long time.”
“If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful,” she wrote. “It gets better. I’m proof.”
Congratulations to Faris on her sobriety and her ability to respond to all of this with grace. May we all be blessed with her composure in the event of an old employer airing out our years-old business.
