For her BAFTAs debut in 2017, the Princess turned to one of her favourite designers, Alexander McQueen, donning a tiered, off-the-shoulder gown embroidered with flowers, a custom take on the dress from the brand’s 2016 resort collection. She wore a variation on the gown (with some speculating that it was an altered version of the very same dress) for the National Portrait Gallery’s gala in 2019; this time, her shoulders were covered by subtle cap sleeves.
Despite being heavily pregnant with Prince Louis, Kate still made it to the BAFTAs in 2018, choosing a flowing, dark green gown by Jenny Packham, which she accessorised with a black velvet sash tied above her bump. It was a small detail, but one that made headlines: that year, the vast majority of female attendees wore black to support the Time’s Up movement; many saw this as a gesture of support from the Princess. She also wore a suite of stunning emerald jewellery – the stone has long been associated with hope and renewal, as well as the suffragette movement.
