On Wednesday, the Prince and Princess of Wales headed to Pontypridd for their first joint visit to Wales in more than a year, and Catherine proudly wore earrings from a local designer for the occasion.

Prince William and Princess Catherine arrived in Pontypridd, Wales amid rainshowers on Wednesday to make their first joint visit since the autumn of 2023. The couple began their trip at Pontypridd Market, where the weather didn’t keep well-wishers from turning out for a walkabout. Princess Catherine wore a bright coat in a patriotic shade of red for the trip, adorned with a fabric daffodil in honor of the upcoming St. David’s Day celebrations.

The couple pitched in at the local Welsh Cake Shop to make a batch of Welsh cakes, a traditional sweet bread flavored with currants and spices. Sensibly, Kate wore her new diamond and sapphire eternity band rather than her large engagement ring to knead the dough.

Later, the Princess changed her jacket as she and the Prince headed to Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland. Volunteers there work to create a safe and welcoming place where the local community can come together and enjoy the benefits of nature.

Kate wore the same jewelry for both parts of the visit: a pair of gold and garnet earrings from a Welsh design brand, Spells of Love, which was founded by the Welsh jewelry designer Hayley Jones in 2016.

Here’s a closer look at the Teardrop Garnet Charm Hoops from the brand’s website. The company describes them as “versatile shimmering gemstone earrings are the perfect 2-in-1 hoops, taking you from day to night with ease.”

The hoops, made of gold vermeil on sterling silver, can be worn with or without the removable garnet charms. The company emphasizes that the garnet gemstones are “natural” and “ethically sourced.”

Because Catherine is a January baby, garnet is her birthstone. She’s had these earrings in her collection for several years, and she’s worn them both with and without the garnet charms for engagements in England and Scotland.

Sadly, the Princess decided not to wear a brooch with her ensemble—I was hoping for another appearance from Queen Alexandra’s Three Feathers Brooch—but the cheerful fabric daffodil, which added a burst of anticipatory spring color, was perhaps the best second choice.
