Representatives for the Duchess of Sussex have refuted claims that she still uses the title Her Royal Highness following her and Prince Harry’s step back from Royal duties.

Harry and Meghan relinquished their HRH titles in March 2020 after deciding to step down as senior members of the Royal Family. However, an interview featuring Meghan on a podcast displayed a card attached to a gift basket from her with “HRH The Duchess of Sussex” inscribed on it.

The gift card was spotted during Meghan’s appearance on the podcast, accompanying a gift basket she sent the host, Jamie Kern Lima. It included homemade treats and was described as saying “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex”.

The founder of IT Cosmetics recounted that the thoughtful parcel complete with strawberry sauce and ice cream arrived at her home “about a year ago… to see if that helps lighten my load”.

Nevertheless, a spokesperson for the couple affirmed they do not employ their HRH titles in any capacity.

Though no formal measures banned their use, the understanding reached between Harry and Meghan and the late Queen along with senior palace figures was that the term “Royal” would be dropped from their branding, pursuant to the historic arrangement known informally as ‘Megxit Day’.

The couple wrote on their official website at the time: “As agreed and set out in January, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will retain their ‘HRH’ prefix, thereby formally remaining known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer actively use their HRH titles as they will no longer be working members of the family as of Spring 2020.”

Buckingham Palace has been asked to provide a statement.

What Meghan spoke about on the podcast

On the podcast, the duchess told of her delight in a newfound “honeymoon” phase she is experiencing with Prince Harry, citing the couple’s relief at gaining “a little bit of breathing space” since stepping away from Royal engagements.

Meghan said the rapid onset of attention from the media after they began dating felt like being thrown “into the trenches”.

The couple began their relationship in 2016 and tied the knot in 2018. They initially embraced Royal duties before choosing to step back in 2020, a decision that strained relations between Harry and both the King and the Prince of Wales.

Reflecting on their early days, Meghan shared: “You have to imagine at the beginning, everyone has, like, butterflies.

“Then we immediately went into the trenches together. Yeah, right out of the gate, like six months into dating.

So now, seven years later, when you have a little bit of breathing space, you can just enjoy each other in a new way, and that’s why I feel like it’s more of a honeymoon period for us now.”

The Duchess commended her husband for ensuring the family’s safety. In January, Harry resolved his lengthy legal dispute with News Group Newspapers (NGN), receiving significant damages and a “full and unequivocal apology” for The Sun’s “serious intrusion” into his private life and “unlawful activities”.

The Duke is also engaged in a legal fight with the Home Office over the extent of taxpayer-funded personal security he should be provided when visiting the UK.

“He’s just out there, just constant, like he’s just going to do whatever he can to make sure that our family is safe and protected and we’re uplifted and still make time for date nights,” Meghan expressed.

“He’s also a fox. If you haven’t noticed, my husband’s very, very handsome. But his heart is even more beautiful,”.

The Duchess of Sussex also opened up about her deep connection with her children, Archie and Lilibet, sharing a touching ritual she has developed for them.

“Before I go to bed, almost every night, I email them, like, here’s your report card from today, or, oh my gosh, wasn’t it the funniest thing this morning?” Meghan shared, expressing the intimate moments she captures in these digital letters.

“Or here’s a picture of you two having breakfast, or here’s you playing.

“The things that you’re not going to frame, the things that you’re not going to put pen to paper in a journal, but which they will end up seeing at one point in their life, maybe when they’re 16 or when they’re 18.

“I’ll say, here’s an email that I’ve been keeping for you. Here’s everything and every moment that I wanted to tell you how much I love you and, like, how proud I am of you.”
