His bombshell BBC interview sent shockwaves through the world, yet King Charles III will have the final say on his reconciliation with Prince Harry.

Sources say the monarch “has left the door open” for a reunion with his son Prince Harry despite the bombshell interview he gave last week – and that is for one heartbreaking reason – his beloved grandchildren.

As his grandson Prince Archie, Prince Harry’s eldest son with Meghan Markle, turns six today, it is all the King wants to spend time with them. A source told The Mirror US, “King Charles still holds out hope to reconcile with Harry for the sake of his grandchildren – though it is a long way off as the trust must be earned back. Prince Harry’s recent interview with the BBC seems to have set this reconciliation back even further. It is feared, however much as it is wanted, it may be a long way off now. Prince Harry is his son, so there is always room for forgiveness, but there is a trust issue which must be worked through first.”

It has been a tumultuous few years for King Charles, who has been receiving treatment for cancer. In the middle of this he has been plagued with family dramas with his brother Prince Andrew, as well as his on-going rift with Harry after his bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview and the release of his top-selling memoir Spare.

In the BBC interview Harry gave last week, the Duke of Sussex said he wanted to reconcile with the royals, while alleging his father was not currently speaking to him. He also said he doesn’t know how long his father has left to live, as King Charles continues his treatment for cancer.

It comes as just last December, The Mirror US reported King Charles’ wish to see more of his grandchildren ‘could be first step’ in uniting Prince William and Prince Harry.

The sovereign is hoping to spend more time with his grandchildren Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet – and wants nothing more than to be united over the festive season, sources have claimed.

Reports have been rife that the King is hoping to build a relationship with Harry’s children, who he has met just a couple of times. The monarch has now expressed his desire to spend more time with the two youngsters after his health woes as he revealed his cancer battle earlier this year, experts report.

A source previously told The Mirror US, “King Charles has expressed his wishes to see his grandchildren – and there’s no better time than the festive period to bring families together. There is no feeling like being a grand-parent and it is a role King Charles relishes. It is his hope for his family to be reunited and there’s no better way than spending quality time with his grandchildren at Christmas. It would be truly special.”

The source added, “There’s nothing King Charles wants more than to see see his family united, and for his sons to put the past behind them and move forward. These are his twilight years and he wants to enjoy them with his grandchildren making special memories.”
