It’s fairly usual for friends to have fun nicknames for each other, even when one of them happens to be third in line to the throne. However, for Princess Charlotte, her nickname isn’t “Princess”.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are keen on providing their nine-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, with as normal an upbringing as they can, despite her Royal status. While she’s known as Charlotte Cambridge at school, her friends have taken to calling her Lottie Wales, a sweet nod to her parents’ titles, which were granted by the King after the Queen’s passing.
It seems this charming nickname isn’t just popular among her Lambrook School peers.
During a visit to Northern Ireland, Instagram influencer Laura-Ann and her son George met Kate Middleton. The Princess of Wales engaged warmly with the young boy, saying: “Hello, what’s your name? Hi George, what a cool name you’ve got, and you look very smart in your bowtie. It’s very nice to meet you.”
Laura-Ann, a 30 year old part-time estate agent from Belfast, went to Windsor Park in hopes of seeing Kate and Prince William. Sharing the details on her Instagram, Laura-Ann recounted the conversation: “So then she asked how old Bertie is, and I said he is four and she said, ‘Oh, he’s the same age as Lottie’. She calls her Lottie!”, as reported by the Mirror, reports Edinburgh Live.
According to Vanity Fair’s Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, Charlotte is lovingly nicknamed ‘Mignonette’ by her parents, which is taken from the French word for “delicate” or “cute,” and they also call her ‘Warrior Princess’ for her feisty personality. An eyewitness at The Range told Daily Mail in 2018 that they overheard Kate calling Charlotte “get up, poppet”.
The Cambridges have special names for their other children too; Prince George goes by George at school but is affectionately called PG and sometimes “Tips” at home, inspired by the well-known British tea brand.
Prince Louis, the youngest, has been observantly nicknamed Boss Baby by some, attributed to his unique character traits.
