The image, taken by photographer Matt Porteous, was accompanied by a beautiful message from Catherine’s husband, Prince William, 42. The future monarch wrote, “To the most incredible wife and mother. The strength you’ve shown over the last year has been remarkable. George, Charlotte, Louis and I are so proud of you. Happy Birthday, Catherine. We love you.” He signed the note with his initial, “W.”
As for the photo itself, it says a lot about the princess. Sure, she looks a little uncomfortable and sure, she lacks the typical joyful expression we became accustomed to in past years. But that’s to be expected. After all, the woman has been through it.
More importantly, Princess Catherine’s body language—and the fact that she took the time to pose for a birthday portrait at all—shows just how strong, resilient and dedicated to her role as a royal family member she really is.
In the pic, she stands tall, head held high, shoulders back, smiling. She seems to be saying to the world, “I’m here and I’m going to get through this.” She projects confidence and strength, which in the context of the past year, is quite the feat.
