If a passenger becomes unresponsive on the flight, the attendants will first check for vital signs. ABC, airways, breathing, circulation. They’ll then discreetly ask if there’s a doctor on board to assist. Do we have a doctor on board? Chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions. If there isn’t a doctor on board, the flight attendants must treat the passenger as alive until landing. But if a doctor is present, they can legally pronounce the passenger deceased mid-flight. When a passenger is pronounced dead, they’re either left in their seat or moved, depending on how full the plane is, and then respectfully covered with a blanket. The captain then informs ground control of the situation. This is Northeast Airlines confirming we have another deceased passenger on board. Seriously, another one. For domestic flights, the arrival city handles the situation. However, on international flights, responsibility falls to the country where the plane is registered.
