Patrick J Adams split the tea on an unscripted moment shared with Meghan Markle during their time on the hit series Suits.

While chatting on the Sidebar: A Suits Watch Podcast with co-star Sarah Rafferty in January, Patrick, 43, recalled an episode’s opening scene in which his character Mike and Meghan’s character Rachel are engaging in dialogue.

It was here Patrick mentioned a line used by Meghan that wasn’t originally in the script.

He remarked: “Right off the bat a shocking line which apparently is not in the script. We have this crazy line where Rachel says she’s not wearing any underwear and upon further inspection not in the script.

“I would be dying to know how it came about. It doesn’t seem like something that Meghan would have improvised. It didn’t feel like that to me for some reason that doesn’t work.

“I don’t know if maybe they came up with that in the moment, like everybody decided to do it or we did it, sometimes you’ll do things as a joke not filming. It’s nice to see these two flirting.”

Patrick hasn’t shied away from discussing his experiences on set with Meghan, who became the Duchess of Sussex, recalling on the same podcast his first meeting with her before the show premiered in 2011.

Patrick recalled: “Meghan and I had done a pilot before, a terrible, terrible pilot together. There was a setting up of a romantic relationship in that particular pilot too, and then we never saw each other again. The pilot failed, it was terrible and went away. So we had never seen each other or spoken to each other again.”

Their paths crossed again at the call-backs for Suits, where Patrick, having been the first to be cast, was participating in chemistry reads with Rachel.

Meghan was also there, and Patrick remembered: “And then I saw her at the call[backs]. I was in there because I was the first to be cast for the show, so when I went in to do the chemistry reads with Rachel, she was right there. And she said: ‘Hi.’ And I went: ‘Oh my god! So good to see you.'”

Patrick believed that their prior acquaintance helped them relax during the table reads, ultimately contributing to their on-screen chemistry.

He explained: “I think our just knowing each other and just getting to calm down and not have those nerves of just getting to know one another, really helped that chemistry read.”

The ease of their interaction was apparent, and Patrick felt that Meghan’s casting was almost certain after their chemistry read. He said: “And it was just clear that we had an easy-going thing when we went into that room. And it was pretty clear, if I remember correctly, that she was gonna get the part from the minute that we did the chemistry read. It was just so much easier than it was with anybody else.”

Patrick is set to appear in the upcoming drama The Bombing of Pan Am 103, based on the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, alongside Connor Swindells, Eddie Marsan, and Merritt Weaver. In discussing his role in the drama, Patrick emphasized the significance of the series, urging viewers to tune in.

He commented: “I think this is a really important story for everybody to be familiar with. Just in my short time working on this I’ve asked a lot of people, especially younger people, if they know about it and I’m shocked by the amount of people who don’t know what happened.

“Ultimately this was a horrific story with an unimaginable loss of life, but also a group of people coming together to do their jobs and to find each other at a time of crisis. I think that is a timeless story and something we can always take value from.”

Don’t miss The Bombing of Pan Am 103, which broadcasts tonight (Sunday, May 18) at 9pm on BBC One.
