Prince William has shared that Prince George may learn sign language – with the deaf community said to be “proud’ of his own late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. The 42-year-old, who is also dad to Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven, recently met Wendy Daunt during a investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Wendy, a teacher honoured for her remarkable work within the deaf community earlier this month, told the BBC, that William told her that his eldest son may been keen on learning sign language. Speaking of the late Princess Diana, Wendy revealed that she wanted to speak to William about the impact that his late mother had on the deaf community.
Speaking of the late royal, who died aged 36 in 1997, Wendy recalled how Diana once attended the British Deaf Association conference in Blackpool, where she “came on stage to receive a book, and she signed in BSL and the deaf people were so amazed and in awe of this.”
Wendy, who was appointed OBE for her voluntary teaching of deaf studies at the Royal School for the Deaf in Derby, told the publication: “I wanted to tell him how proud the deaf community were of his mother, Princess Diana.”
She noted that William appeared to appreciate her sentiments, adding, “So I said, ‘Why don’t your three children learn to sign?’, and his face said, ‘I’m not sure’, but then he said, ‘Maybe Prince George would like to.'”
Discussing further about their interaction, Wendy added: “Prince William did say that I could teach Prince George BSL.
“But I think it would be better for a younger person, a boy of his own age perhaps to teach him football signs. I would like Prince George to be friends with deaf children.”
Much like his late mother, William impressed onlookers at a Buckingham Palace investiture ceremony by congratulating one of the guests using British Sign Language back in 2020.
The royal was spotted smiling at TV veteran Alex Duguid as he signed “Congratulations, Alex,” with Alex replying, “Thank you.”
Taking to social media at the time, fans praised William, with one writing: “Well done, Prince William! Did you all know his Mum Princess Diana learned sign language as patron of the British Deaf Association?”
Another fan added: “How wonderful of Prince William to take the time to learn sign language. That is how a royal with integrity acts. So incredibly thoughtful.”
