The royal family is showing their support amid difficult times.

Hours after a car plowed into a group of pedestrians lined up to celebrate Liverpool Football Club’s English Premier League title win on May 26, Prince William and Kate Middleton expressed they are “deeply saddened” by the incident.

“What should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy,” William and Kate—who share children Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7—said in a social media statement May 27. “Our thoughts are with those who were injured and to the first responders and emergency services on the ground.”

And just moments before, King Charles III addressed the shocking incident that took place during his two-day visit to Canada alongside Queen Camila.

“It is truly devastating to see that what should have been a joyous celebration for so many could end in such distressing circumstances,” Charles wrote in a statement shared to X. “At this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool, I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.”

As for what exactly happened? According to Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims, “The car stopped at the scene and a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested.”

“We believe him to be the driver of the vehicle,” she said during a press conference, adding that extensive investigations are underway. “It is vital that people do not speculate or spread misinformation on social media.”

In another press conference held the following day, authorities confirmed that 50 people were ultimately treated at the hospital for injuries sustained during the incident and added a few more details surrounding how the car was able to surpass the road closures and precautions taken ahead of the FC Championship parade.

Officials believe the driver, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, “was able to follow an ambulance onto Water Street after the roadblock was temporarily lifted so that the ambulance crew could attend to a member of the public who was having a suspected heart attack,” Sims stated. “There was no intelligence to suggest an incident of this nature would take place.”

“There is a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands, ultimately this whole thing could be resolved through him,” Harry added. “Not necessarily by intervening but by stepping aside and allowing the experts to do what is necessary and to carry on.”

Despite the years of conflict, he’s waving the white flag in hopes of reconciliation. He added, “Life is precious, I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
