Sunjay Kapur
16th June 2025 – (London) Sunjay Kapur, a billionaire businessman and polo enthusiast with close ties to Prince William, died in a freak accident on June 12 during a polo match in Windsor. The 53-year-old chairman of Sona Comstar, a global automotive components giant, reportedly swallowed a bee mid-match, leading to an anaphylactic shock and fatal heart attack.
Kapur, educated in Britain, was a prominent figure in both business and social circles. Hours before the tragedy, he had expressed condolences on social media for the victims of the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, writing, “Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash… My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected.”
Known for his love of polo, Kapur’s personal life also drew significant attention. He was previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, a union that ended in a highly publicised divorce in 2016. At the time of his death, Kapur was married to Priya Sachdev, an Indian model and entrepreneur, with whom he shared a young son.
Kapur’s death highlights the rare but serious risks associated with bee stings in the throat, which can cause airway blockages, severe swelling, and cardiac arrest. According to medical experts, such incidents can be fatal without immediate treatment.
As chairman of Sona Comstar, Kapur oversaw one of India’s leading automotive parts manufacturers, a company founded by his father, Surinder Kapur, a pioneer in the industry. Forbes estimated Sunjay Kapur’s net worth at $1.2 billion.
