The engagement of George Woodhouse and Celia McCorquodale, daughter of Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, was announced in November 2017, with the news immediately catching the attention of high society hons and heirs across the country. After all, the Spencers continue to reign as one of the nation’s most storied dynasties, so any family gathering is set to make headlines – let alone a wedding.

The celebrations certainly did not disappoint. Celia walked down the aisle with her full-length veil held in place by the Spencer tiara, marking the first time that the family heirloom had been worn since Diana broke tradition by choosing it for her own wedding to Prince Charles. The late Princess of Wales’s niece dazzled in the jewels, looking strikingly similar to her aunt in the tiara, which has been in the family since 1919.

Also worn by Celia’s mother and her aunt, Lady Jane Fellowes, on their wedding days, the Spencer tiara has quite a history. The central component was a wedding present for Princess Diana’s grandmother, Lady Cynthia Hamilton, ahead of her nuptials with Albert, Viscount Althorp, in 1919. The top and end sections of the tiara, says The Court Jeweller, were added by Albert’s great aunt, Lady Sarah Isabella Spencer, and the House of Garrard added the sparkling jewels to the piece in the 1930s.
