we were together for about four years and then when we did break up um we did remain friends and we were each other’s first love martha Plimpmpton offering rare comments about the late River Phoenix the actress detailed their relationship on the Dinners on Me podcast posted June 16th telling host Jesse Tyler Ferguson about their highprofile romance as their stars were on the rise in 80s Hollywood that relationship never really goes away you can’t you can’t ever let something like that go it’s just too important and too like altering i mean it’s part of it’s it’s made you who you are you know especially in those really formative years i mean it’s it’s a huge part of who I am but I think fame was really hard on River i think he really just didn’t want know what to do with all of that the 54year-old shared insights surrounding River’s cut short career as the StandbyMe star struggled amid navigating fame it got harder for him and he was not as equipped I think as maybe some other people might be to handle Yeah that stuff because he was a very at heart very innocent and and uh like a driven by love human being martha and River remained close friends after their eventual split a few years before he died from a drug overdose at 23 years old his affliction his illness was incredibly difficult to for him to manage on his own and and he never really got the help that I think he would have done amazingly well with if he had gotten that help and unfortunately it just it got him before he had a chance to do that but um but yeah I mean I miss him every single day every single day yeah [Music]

My favorite movie with River Phoenix was also one of his last, and possibly the role that led to his death. 'My Own Private Idaho' is a great film; the story is very Dickens like in its' own daring way and the cinematography is beautiful. But poor Phoenix fell into addiction while researching the role.
So are we going to talk about him dating a “boy”? Not that there’s anything wrong with it but we may have found another issue with River considering the era we’re talking about.

Too bad they didn't stay together. His girlfriend at the time of his death, Samantha Mathis, didn't help him get the help he needed. So sad.
Such a shame..he was so talented. I often wonder how many more big things he would have accomplished in his life😢
