William has spoken about modernizing the monarchy, and this could be an example of that, if he does in fact decide to pull back on the pomp and pageantry, as it’s being suggested.

Prince William is under pressure to ditch a long-held Royal Family tradition that’s been branded as “ridiculous” and more suited for a Disney fairy tale.
As the 43-year-old Prince of Wales prepares for his future coronation, rumors swirl about him potentially favoring a less extravagant ceremony. King Charles shortened his own coronation by thirty minutes from Queen Elizabeth II’s three-hour spectacle, which may be a sign of the times that the British monarchy is adaptable.
According to the Sunday Times’ Roya Nikkah, William has signaled his desire for a strikingly different coronation, aiming for an event that’s “relevant” to our era and bridges communities within the Commonwealth.

An insider disclosed that William might opt for a modest ceremony reminiscent of those held for medieval monarchs, with an emphasis on what’s meaningful in current times: inclusivity and cutting down on excess grandeur.
Among the suggested changes is scrapping the Imperial State Crown, valued at $6.81 billion and adorned with 3,170 gemstones since 1937. This iconic crown has been an essential element of past coronations, worn by Charles as he led the procession during his own.
Some critics believe it’s time to leave behind the antiquated symbols of past times.
An insider mocked the notion of a fairy-tale-like coronation, reminiscing about William and Catherine’s wedding attire instead: “That ridiculous thing that looks like it’s out of Disney? No. What I remember most about that day were William and Catherine’s robes, Catherine’s beautiful, simple headpiece, and William wearing nothing on his head.”

The decision on which crown William will wear for his eventual coronation is still up in the air, with some feeling a sentimental draw to the Imperial State Crown, which has ties to his father and grandmother.
William has shown he’s not always one to follow tradition; in 2024, he skipped the expected Court Dress at the Order of the Garter ceremony.
While King Charles III was adorned in the customary “knee socks and embroidered garter,” William opted for a contemporary white tie outfit with standard trousers.
Daily Mail’s Richard Eden shared his disappointment at the event. Eden said: “William was at the event, but he opted for white tie and just regular trousers – so a bit of a disappointment really. It would be great to see him in those silk stockings and breeches.”
Despite having worn knee-breeches before, Eden observes that William appears “uncomfortable” in such formal attire, although he speculates that Princess Kate probably enjoys these moments.
Eden noted with a smile: “You can always see her sort of teasing and giggling at him – particularly when it’s the Order of the Garter ceremony where he has to wear all the velvet robes and the feathers. That’s always fun.”
