Scarlett Johansson Interview for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
different plate for your bacon is that true no you with me Vic you got it they’re constantly quarreling in here it’s crazy camera department the lighting department just put them up this movie was uh it was first of all it was really entertaining i enjoyed it a lot and I like the dynamic between you and Penelope and and Rebecca and Javier and and your character is sort of in the center of all of that i mean you’re talk about the developing a chemistry with four separate characters on four different levels um well you know I mean it’s sort of I think that it it works in a sense that you um and in any any kind of film or theater or whatever you’re interacting with someone else obviously and there’s um there’s sort of an action reaction that takes place and so it’s you establish your relationship with you know these different characters um you know based on how they are playing with you um so it’s you know even though it might seem confusing maybe to the viewer because there’s so many different relationships going on um hopefully not too confusing but you you know as an actor you are just living the life of the character i mean you don’t think about um you know you don’t think about how the you know the comp you’re not analyzing the well I mean as an actor you are but as the character you’re not analyzing the complexities of your life as these people come in and out you know so I don’t know i guess it’s all part of the it’s part of the game I guess now now after the screening in Can at the press conference Woody talked about you know well Barcelona said “Come make a film here and and the and the town really is quite part of a like a character in the movie and and so talk about sort of reacting and and working in that environment with all that beautiful artwork and that history there it was a really gorgeous place to work i mean being in Barcelona is is beautiful like no complaints about being there for the summer and the weather was nice and the food and the wine and everything was lovely and um you know it was really it was a it was it got it was crazy at times because our set became like a kind of where’s Waldo sort of scenario where like the newspaper would then print like the directions and where we were and what time we were shooting and like what we ate for lunch and it was nuts because you know thousands of of tourists and um you know and locals alike would show up and and uh it was it was overwhelm it was it was overwhelming it really was it was overwhelming at times so I I kind of stayed out of Barcelona i stayed in a different part of um of Spain in a in a smaller like little community and I I just it was it was funny because all the touristic things that my character does in the movie I was actually experiencing like for the first time which was which was strange oh great well thank you i enjoyed a lot

Uhm well you know I mean its sort of I think it works in a sense that you uhm in any any kind of film, theatre or whatever your interacting with someone else obviously and there’s uhm a sort of action reaction that takes place and so its, you establish a relationship with you know these characters uhm you know based on how they’re playing with you uhm so its you know even though it might seem confusing maybe to the viewer because there’s so many relationships going on uhm hopefully not too confusing but you, as an actor you are just living the life of a character you don’t think about uhm you know you don’t think a bout how, you know the complex-, you’re not analyzing the, well as an actor your are but as a character you’re not analyzing the complexities of your life as these people come in and out you know. I don’t know, I guess its all part of the, its part of the game I guess.

It was a really gorgeous place to work I mean being in Barcelona is beautiful, I have no complaints being there for the summer and the weather was nice and the food and the wine and everything was lovely and uhm you know it was really, it was, it, it got, it crazy at time because our set became like a kind of where’s Waldo kind of scenario where like the newspaper would then print like the directions and where we were and what times we were shooting and like what we ate for lunch and it was nuts because you know thousands of tourists and uhm you know and locals alike would show up and it was open and uh it was overwhelming, it was overwhelming it really was, it was overwhelming at times, so I kind of stayed out of Barcelona, I stayed in a different part of uhm of Spain in a smaller like little community. I just it was funny because all the touristic things my character does in the movie I was actually experiencing like for the first time which was strange.
