Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton had made a pact following their brief split in 2007.

The royal couple broke up in April 2007 and got back together in June 2007 after dating for five years. Kate and William first met in 2001 at St. Andrews University and were close friends for a bout a year before it “sort of blossomed,” according to the Prince of Wales in their 2010 engagement interview with ITV News. William also addressed the reason for the breakup in the same interview. He explained that at the time, they had needed “a bit of space” as they were both carving their own individual paths while growing.

“We did split up for a bit, but that was just, we were both very young, it was at university, and we were both sort of defining ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff,” William said to the outlet. “It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up.”

Royal correspondent and journalist Katie Nicholl wrote in her 2011 book The Making of a Royal Romance, about how the couple took a vacation to Desroches in the Seychelles following their reconciliation from their separation. It was reportedly the first time the pair was fully alone since the breakup and William praised the vacation as the best to the islanders.

“With a population of just 50 and three miles long, the paradise island was the perfect escape,” Katie wrote, per The Daily Mail.

She stated that after the couple got back together, “both of them knew that at some point they had to discuss the future.”

“For a young man who has an inherent fear of tomorrow this was not easy for William, but the tranquil backdrop of the island was as good place as any to discuss it.”

So the royal correspondent said their trip at the African island in August 2007 was the first time the couple had a serious discussion about marriage and “William assured Kate she was the one.”

“William, who had inherited something of his father’s fear of commitment, knew he would lose Kate if he could not give her some form of guarantee,” Katie added in the book.

Katie quoted a member of the couple’s inner circle, that elaborated on the conversation Kate and William had, “They didn’t agree to get married there and then; what they made was a pact. William told Kate she was the one, but he was not ready to get married. He promised her his commitment and said he would not let her down, and in turn she agreed to wait for him.”

William kept his promise as the couple got engaged in October 2010 on the side of Mount Kenya in Kenya and then married publicly in April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London. The couple share three children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis. 7.
