‘M3GAN 2.0’ director explains why they gave M3GAN an ‘unexpected’ redemption arc

essentially that the the the way it worked was um uh yeah there was a J James Juan um you know before I had signed on J James Juan uh knew that he wanted um as the producer of of the movie and you know he sort of created the the concept and the character of of Megan the first time around. uh he he had the idea of Megan going up against another doll and I was thrilled with that idea because over the course of making the first movie I had learned to really empathize with her as a character and try to understand things from her point of view and I kind of felt like in a funny way she was a little bit shortch changed and it was interesting getting audience reactions that kind of said we were on Megan’s side right up until the very last minute of the movie and you know doing another story kind of gave me an opportunity to um you know g give her a redemption arc wi-i which is just you know hugely kind of um you know which I thought would be somewhat unexpected but also kind of obvious in a way like it should people love her so much they want to they want to see her um you know g get her get her own story. There’s a moment um later on in the film when there’s kind of a bait and switch and at one point um Gemma thinks that it could have been Megan all along and she’s kind of been the bad guy, but obviously we see that she’s a good guy and we get her redemption arc. But was there ever a discussion about making her go back to where she started and being the quote unquote villain again or did you guys always want her to have a redemption story? Um, if there were if there were, it wasn’t with me. Like I I I um I mean I I w I just wanted the audience to not be sure. I thought it would this will be more satisfying if the audience is kind of not sure if they can trust Megan or not. And in that way, it plays to our own fears about uh AI. It’s like we kind of just have this deep-seated mistrust of it. And I thought this would be a really fun opportunity if we realized that um you know it’s I mean and by the way spoilers but uh but uh but you know that that essentially um a lot of like Gemma’s own kind of like worst instincts come to bear in that moment.
You guys did that effectively because I feel like the whole second half of the movie I was like damn who do I I don’t know who to trust. I knew the boyfriend. Sorry I’m forgetting the boyfriend’s name. knew that he was no good, but you guys did a really good job of like kind of sprinkling in different things. And I guess like you it speaks to the real life that we live in of like AI, is it good? Is it not good? There’s that tough war about it, you know.
Yeah, absolutely. And you know, I think uh for me I I I just keep thinking about the fact that that you know, I I I was thinking a lot about this as a parenting allegory and about our responsibilities to to training AI. And uh when you think about it, it’s like it’s such an we talk about uh whether or not AI will become self-aware or you know achieve consciousness, but we’re so unprepared for that to happen. And in a way, this movie was, you know, touches on that a little bit. It’s like if something like Megan really did exist, you know, we we we sort of have an obligation to to kind of show her that we’re not monsters ourselves.

Everyone deserves a second chance — including M3GAN.

In the new horror sequel, the AI-powered doll is rebuilt and turns to the good side as she teams up with Gemma (Allison Williams) and Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw) to defeat a humanoid military robot named AMELIA.

Director Gerard Johnstone exclusively told The Post that he was “thrilled” about the decision to give M3GAN a redemption arc in “M3GAN 2.0.”
