King Charles has officially authorizedPrince William and Princess Kate to bestow one of the monarchy’s most prestigious honors: the Royal Warrant of Appointment.

The decision marks the first time in over 100 years that the Princess of Wales will be able to issue Royal Warrants, according to the New York Post. The last woman to do so was Queen Mary, before her husband, George V, ascended to the throne in 1910.

Princess Diana, notably, was not given the honor during her tenure. Queen Camilla, meanwhile, has recently used her warrant-giving authority to recognize individuals like her personal hairstylist, Jo Hansford.

What is a Royal Warrant of Appointment, you ask? According to the royal family’s website, it’s a “mark of recognition” given to tradespeople who supply goods or services to royal households.

For the supplier, it’s a major endorsement that enables them to advertise the fact that they supply to the Royal Household—lending them a bit more prestige. Until now, only select senior royals like Charles and Queen Camilla held the authority to grant the coveted designation.

Starting Spring 2026, the Prince and Princess of Wales can formally recognize the companies and craftspeople who serve them, marking a significant upgrade to their official duties.

“Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to be able to recognise and celebrate British industry, creativity and skills through the granting of Warrants,” Sir Ian Patrick, private secretary to the Prince of Wales, said in a public statement.

In order to be eligible for a Royal Warrant, a company must have supplied the royal household for five out of the past seven years and must meet rigorous standards. Currently, about 800 businesses hold the distinction, ranging from artisan food producers and tailors to hotels and service providers.

Those already holding warrants from Charles and Camilla have until the end of this month to apply for renewal.

With William and Kate now added to the list of royals who can issue such warrants, the monarchy is signaling both a continuation of tradition and a nod to the next generation’s growing role in shaping it.
