Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) – Relief amongst the darkness | Marvel Mad Retro Review
Hello and welcome back to another episode of Marvel Mad. I’m your host as always Dwayne the Captain Coffee and we have another classic MCU review and this time we’re going all the way back to June 2018. We had one of the the most fun entrance into the MCU with Ant-Man and the Wasp. Now, coming off the emotional wrecking ball that was in Avengers Infinity War, Marvel gave us a muchneeded breather with Scott Lang’s return. And let’s be honest, we all needed some laughs and a giant pez dispenser after watching half the universe get absolutely decimated and wiped off the existence. So, in the MCU at this point in time, we’ve got Scot Lang in House Arrest playing uh rock band and like doing magic tricks. We got Hank and Hope. Hank Ppin and Hope Vany on the run and obviously everybody’s trying to build a quantum bridge to rescue rescue Janet Vany. So who’s been stuck in a quantum realm since the 80s. So it’s long overdue to have a big family reunion. Now this Marvel movie is a proper fun light-hearted and just enjoyable film sort of thing. The pacing is slick, the comedy lands, and the tone is refreshing refresh refreshingly just light. Especially compared to the heavyhitting Avengers Infinity War we just had and it’s like Marvel at is most Marvel sort of style just dafted heist capers with a sci-fi sort of twist and it was just what it needed right after Avengers Infinity War. Now Paul R again nails it at Scott Lang. He’s lovable, goofy, just a genuinely nice guy that you’re always rooting for. And like the magic tricks, the little like cape like adventure thing he does for his daughter, which 100% if Eleanor was that age, I would 100% do. And like playing on rock band as well. So so good. So clever and just just nice. It really was nice in that lot. And then you obviously had um Agent Woo coming in checking them up all the time and stuff. Their their combination as well just was so so nice that and um it was so so good in that one. And the true the film truly shined with Evangelene Lily’s Wasp. This was the first MCU film as well that put a female’s name, hero’s name in the title, and Hope absolutely owns it from her intent action scene, especially in the one in the um kitchen when she’s like running across that knife. So, so good. A nonsense attitude. She’s pretty much the brains, the brawn, and the badass all in one character, which is really nice. Now, let’s talk about Ghost. Ava Star isn’t your traditional Marvel villain. And that’s probably kind of the point really that she’s she’s in pain. She’s desperate to fix herself. And honestly, you can understand why she’s doing this sort of thing. And you’ve got uh a tra like a tragic figure more than an evil one sort of thing. And it adds to a a unique emotional thread that otherwise helps this light-hearted story. And obviously you’ve got the help of Lawrence Fishburn as well as um Bill Foster. His inclusion I was really really happy with. I was I was hoping that we’d get like a old glimpse of him being giant man or something like that but I would love to see him in another Marvel project sort of thing cuz I think he’d do really well in it. He’s a brilliant actor in that lot. But talking about brilliant actors, we can’t forget about Luis and his gang as well and that lot them that gang he’s got little gang with Luis that lot. They are absolutely just hilarious that lot that one of them going on about Baba Yaga and like the um security firm that they’ve got is just brilliant that lot. And obviously Louis played by Michael Penna, he’s he 100% needs his own Disney Plus short or miniseries or something because we re we really want I’d love to see it. Luis explains the Infinity Saga. You imagine him going back and forwards and telling these daff little like recap sequences. It would be so so funny and so come on Disney Plus please give us give us that. We ain’t had a Marvel like one shot in ages. Give us that one cuz that would be outstanding. It just be so so funny. Of course, the big takeaway of this is the quantum realm and what was like a trippy concept become a critical part of the large MCU puzzle. Janet’s return, the healing powers, and the time vortex is all seeded planted, all seeds planted that pay off big time obviously in Avengers Endgame coming up soon. And speaking of Avengers Endgame, let’s talk about that postredit scene. Scott’s getting trapped in the quantum realm trying to like get all the essences that can like heal hope um heal Ghost again, anybody else that needs that sort of essence. But he’s in there just as Thanos snaps his fingers. The rest of the team dusted, gone, just leaving Scott in limbo really long. And it’s like, damn, this this might have been a light-hearted, laughing, joking film, but deep down, it instantly ties straight back in to the darker MCU at this point out. Now, Ant-Man and the Lost may not have been the flashiest MCU movie, and it’s probably not exactly for everybody, but I think it funny, clever, and just full of heart. And at point it was critical to the larger MCU l MCU lore at the moment sort of thing. It gave us laughs what we needed right after Avengers Endgame uh Avengers Infin Infinity War and it was just a much needed film at this point in the MCU and seeing Wasp in full flow as well like after getting that teas last Antman film was really really nice. But anyway, what do you think about Antman the Wasp? Did you enjoy it? Was it not for you? Let me know in the comment section below. Anyway, thank you much for joining us on another episode of Marvel Mad and we’ll see you all next time. Thank you much and goodbye.
