Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are keeping a personal Independence Day tradition alive, one that began on their second date nearly a decade ago.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, shared a cozy selfie of the couple Friday on Instagram, along with festive red, white, and blue cupcakes, offering a window into a yearly family ritual that now includes their two young children.

“Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate,” Meghan wrote in the caption. “Now, all these years later, our two children are in on the tradition.” She closed the message with, “Happy Independence Day! May your day be as sweet as these cupcakes.”

The post included three images: a photo of cupcakes made with son Archie, 6, and daughter Lilibet, 4; a selfie of Meghan nestled beside a grinning Harry, 40; and a snapshot of one of the original cupcakes he gifted her back in 2016.

That early moment was first revealed in their 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, and further detailed in Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare. He recalled arriving at their second date, held once again at London’s Soho House, with a pink box in hand.

“She walked in wearing a pretty blue sundress with white pinstripes. She was aglow. I stood and said: I bear gifts,” he wrote. “She opened the box. Cupcakes. Red, white and blue cupcakes, to be exact.”

Harry recalled joking about the contrasting views on Independence Day between the U.S. and U.K., and described the date as feeling like “Overture, Prelude, Kettle Drums, Act I.”

He added, “A phase of my life, the first half? was coming to a close.” Meghan also offered a glimpse of the family’s holiday celebration earlier in the day through her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

In a short video, she’s seen preparing a patriotic charcuterie board, captioned simply: “Happy 4th of July!” While the Duke of Sussex remains a U.K. citizen, he’s spoken publicly about the possibility of adopting U.S. citizenship.

“American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now,” he told Good Morning America in February during an Invictus Games promotional appearance in Canada.

Asked if he enjoys living in California, Harry replied, “It’s amazing. I love every single day.”

Still, he admitted, “Do I feel American? Um, no. I don’t know how I feel.”
