Princess Diana would have turned 64 years old on July 1. Tragically, she passed away on August 31, 1997, in a car accident. She left behind her family, including her beloved sons Prince William and Prince Harry, and millions of people who loved her. Prince William, now 43, honored Princess Diana’s legacy on her birthday and celebrated the two-year anniversary of Homewards. He began the program to end homelessness in Great Britain. According to People, Prince William met with representatives from six regions to discuss progress.

Former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke highly of Prince William saying he was “very influenced by his mother” and Princess Diana “encouraged him to take an interest in why people were on the streets, and why people were homeless, and why people needed a better chance.”

Princess Diana wanted her sons to understand how fortunate they were, and Prince William clearly understood the assignment.

According to a celebratory post on Instagram, Homewards is making strides.

“Last year set the foundations, and the last 12 months have been about scale, delivery and impact. Whilst ending homelessness is all about homes, it isn’t the whole story. Along with our partners, we recognise that more is needed and are working on initiatives driven by data and early intervention too, as well as helping to shift the broader narrative around homelessness,” the post explains. “We are seeing real momentum, and it is down to the commitment and hard work of the people and partnerships delivering change across the UK.”

Many shared their excitement for Prince William and his dedication to honoring Princess Diana’s legacy.
