Jane Birkens’s original Hermes bag has a new owner. The black leather purse designed for the actress by the French label’s former chief executive Jean Louie Duma in the early8s sells for over $10 million at auction July 10th. with Sbees saying in a statement, “In its first market appearance in 25 years, Jane Bergen’s original Hermes bag created a sensation at Sbees in Paris this afternoon, selling for €8.6 million, €10.1 million and becoming the most valuable handbag ever sold at auction.” The auction house continues. What followed was an electrifying 10-minute bidding battle between nine determined collectors with bids coming in over the phones, online, and in the room. In the end, the handbag that changed fashion history was met with applause as it sold to a private collector from Japan. The Birkin, which was originally created to replace Jane’s heavily used wicker basket, has gone on to become a cultural icon and status symbol in the fashion world, with the purses generally selling for between 20 and $30,000 retail, depending on their color, material, and limited edition status.
