Pride and Prejudice, however, marked an important milestone for her because it was not only widely successful, but also earned critical acclaim. She recalled the bewildering experience of receiving some of the worst reviews of her career for the sequel Pirates 2, while simultaneously being nominated for an Oscar for Pride and Prejudice. At just 20, Nightly became one of the youngest nominees for best actress in the history of the Academy Awards. She already had a string of popular films like Bend It Like Beckan and Love Actually under her belt, but even these were met with divided opinions. Looking back at her early films, she acknowledged the harsh reviews, recalling, “As a 17-year-old, the negatives are what stay with you. Therefore, the overwhelmingly positive reception of Pride and Prejudice was a refreshing change. In an interview with the Times of London last year, Nightly elaborated on the dual nature of her experience, stating, “It’s peculiar to have a project that simultaneously builds you up and tears you down.” Despite starring in two more Pirates films after Pride and Prejudice, the reaction to the franchise left a lasting impression.
