They won’t be the only regal presence at the game, however. Following the spectacular win of England’s Lionesses in the semi-final, Prince William will be travelling to Switzerland to cheer the team on. The Prince, who is patron of the Football Association, took to social media following the semi-finals, saying: ‘Brilliant performance @Lionesses! One game from glory!’

Indeed, he has been actively encouraging the squad for weeks – before they headed off for the championships, he visited the team at their St George’s Park training ground, where he shared words of encouragement. ‘The men’s team could definitely learn off your camaraderie and your team environment,’ he said. ‘You’re brilliant together; you create a very unique unit that is rare in lots of other sports. So hold onto that, treasure that, build on it, because it’s one of your greatest assets.’ He has been keenly following their progress since, and travelled to Switzerland earlier in the tournament to watch the Lionesses in their group match against the Netherlands, which they won 4-0.

King Charles has joined his son in rooting for England, and shared his own words of congratulations following the semi-final. In a statement posted to Instagram, the monarch said: ‘My wife and I join all our family in wishing you, the proud Lionesses, our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the UEFA EURO Tournament. Your journey to this stage has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing the skill, determination (and test of nerve!) for which your team is so rightly celebrated. Knowing the Lionesses’ fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday.’
