its scaring me how much bolder people like this are becoming, like the rise of homophobic/racist/misogynistic attacks recently are so worrying to see, i’m glad the injuries aren’t so bad though!

The U.K. is probably the only big Western European country where I’ve felt unsafe just for being a noticeably gay person.

I’m a queer guy in the UK and I’ve had more homophobic attacks in the last 12 months than in the last 30 years. And Im not particularly “gay looking”
People here need to stop thinking of the Trump madness as something happening somewhere else, this country is observably doing its own fascist speedrun
Obligatory fuck Joanne

The UK is still a deeply homophobic country and it keeps regressing more and more. Homophobic tweets and slurs are normalised in the media and every few months, celebs have them unearthed.
Homophobic language is also commonly used in UK schools. From ‘gay’ been used as an insult (seemingly without much malicious homophobia behind it) to the f slur (which suggested a little more viciousness), it was just part of the vernacular of London teenagers.
Even ‘gay’ is commonly used derogatory term to mean uncool, weak, and unmasculine.
Fuck Joanne and fuck every single politician who has normalised and profitted of lobbying against Gay rights. They need to be held responsible like the criminals they are.

So glad she’s going to be able to press charges. Is there any recourse for it to be charged as a hate crime where she lives? All I can think of is how The Vivienne had a similar instance at McDonald’s, perhaps contributing to her not feeling safe or valid in her own country…

I don’t know, maybe because most straight people aren’t getting punched and attacked for who they are?

That she was attacked is awful, but the police will be all over this. They’ve got the attacker/s on video and the kind of people who do that to a stranger on the street will almost certainly already be on their radar. Catching and prosecuting will be an easy win and a great bit of desperately needed PR given their most recent high profile work has been arresting an 83 year old priest because she was sitting in her folding chair holding a sign supporting Palestine Action and protesting genocide.

About 10 years ago, my friend was assaulted for being gay. He was at a bar and a random guy punched him. My friend was knocked unconscious, and also hit his head on the bar when he fell. He was left with a traumatic brain injury, and developed epilepsy.
He had to relearn how to do many things; walking, talking, etc. He fought so hard to get his life back. And eventually, he did. He got a great job, bought his first house, and was on the road to a great life.
And then he died.
Last July, he had a seizure while alone at home. A seizure *directly* as a result of the TBI caused by the hateful man that punched him all those years ago.
That man has no idea my friend is dead. He faced no charges when the assault happened, because he fled. No one knows who he is.
I will forever be angry at this man for taking my friend away. I will never forgive him for being so selfish and hateful that he felt compelled to cause physical harm to a stranger.
I miss you, Josh. We all do. You were a bright spot on this gloomy planet, and the world is darker without you in it 💔
