“contingent upon” is where you lose me, cos you know they’ll just not do it and blame the contingencies.
this is toothless declarations to try and look less complicit after it was reported they’re sending weapons to Israel.
I am saddened and ashamed to say that this comes on the heels of a report from CBC that Canada has continued to supply Israel with weapons, claiming that “Canadian [government figures](https://www.international.gc.ca/transparency-transparence/controls-controles/military-goods-2024-marchandises-militaires.aspx?lang=eng) show that Israel was Canada’s fourth-most frequent customer for military equipment that year, with 164 permits used”. I don’t really know what all of these countries suddenly trying to achieve by recognising Palestine because while it sounds amazing, it changes nothing on the ground because Israel does not want a two-state solution and they will not feel pressured by all these countries because the Trump administration also doesn’t want a two-state solution.
Did we reach the point where even these countries know that they were complicit in a genocide so they quickly want to save face by recognising Palestine therefore history will not judge them as harshly? Recognition is cool but first we need to stop the genocide which would require these countries to actually consider sanctions.
I know it’s easy to be dismissive of things like this but it’s genuinely a small win and this is how change happens on a grander scale.
The small wins pile up and the permission structure changes. This is how a lot of countries and organizations will slowly shift to calling it a genocide like it is and then eventually pretending like they always did that from day one.
It’s a good sign.
Why recognize in September?? why not now? Also, how about not funding Isr@el???

Recognizing Palestine is good and all, but how about assisting in stopping the ethnic cleansing?
I watched the presser and was annoyed none of the journalists asked about them still selling weapons to Israel despite the previous government telling us they stopped.
This is so complex because on the one hand I want to take this as a small win but on the other hand Canada is still sending weapons to Israel, so it’s not really a win. No contingencies, no supporting Israel, free Palestine.
Pretending you’re helping while fueling the fire
I want to make this abundantly clear that this is contingent on the Palestinian Authority taking control, agreeing to major reforms and any future Palestinian state being completely demilitarized. So basically Israel will still be able to commit it’s genocide after a Palestinian state is recognized. Additionally, the Palestinian Authority is basically an Israeli collaborator. They kidnap Palestinians for the Israeli state and they will brutalize Palestinians for Israel.
Overall, this is a very very small step in the right direction. The only solution should be a 1 state solution, where everybody has equal rights.
Edit: Also want to add, this is basically a reservation. We all know how much Canada loves corralling indigenous people on to a small piece of land and ensuring they can’t defend themselves. I’m sure in 50 years Israelis will also be doing shitty land acknowledgements.

An ultimatum to recognize a country that’s existed for centuries… awesome job Carney. And this is why I didn’t vote for the liberals last election.🙂
