Leanne Morgan & Kristen Johnston Explain How Their Sisterly Bond Sticks With Them Offscreen

No pressure, but you’re the first date I’ve been on since George Michael left WH. Leanne is absolutely hilarious. It’s sharp. It’s it’s it’s funny. It’s witty. It’s heartfelt and full of southern sass just like your standup, Leanne. Um, now this show is inspired by your standup, which blends southern charm and the family chaos. Uh, what is it like bringing that voice to the scripted series? Oh, my darling, it’s a dream come true. I pinch myself every day. I can’t even believe it. my angel. I love that. I love that. Um, now Carol is such a fun counterpart to Leanne. Kind of like a tornado of tough love. Kristen, what drew you to the role and the character. Uh, Carol, and how did you and Leanne find that rhythm with each other? Because you guys are great with playing off each other. Well, thank you. First of all, they offered it to me, so I took it. I mean, that’s really the big drama there. But, you know, when I met her, like, look, I saw the first five minutes that Chuck called me and he was like, “You do you know this woman?” And I was like, you know, I’m not big on standup. He was like, just turn on Netflix right now and watch her. And I watched the first literally the first second, she’s like, I’m wearing a girdle from here to here. And I was like, oh my god, I’m obsessed. So, um, the then the minute we met each other, I just loved her. I really did. I was like, oh. And then this first script came in and it was such an exploration of a time in a woman’s life and this horrific event that happens, but then her reconnection with her sister. I don’t know. The whole thing just I don’t know. It was like one of those miracle actress miracles that never happens. So easy to fly through these episodes and they’re so funny. Now Leanne, this is your first scripted series and Kristen, you are a legend. A sitcom legend. What did you guys learn from each other uh during the process of shooting the show? Honey, she had to teach me how to do it and work her job. I was scared to death. She was like, “What’s blocking? What is blocking? What camera do I look at? Do I look at a camera?” And then I had to learn a script. That was hard. I don’t know how these people do it. Anyway, she learned. She learned fast. Well, thank you. You did. You’re a quick study. Well, thank you. But it was wild and a challenge but d wonderful. Now Leanne, there’s a fantastic line that your character says during an uncomfortable meeting with the woman that Bill, played by Ryan Styles cheats with. She says, “I don’t know how I got here, but I’m okay with where I’m going.” It really captures the heart of the show uh for the both of you. Uh for the both of you, how does that line reflect where your characters are in life and what kind of freedom and fun comes with playing women who uh who are rebuilding on their own terms, who no longer give a damn? Uh, you know, I’m kidding. But no, there’s a certain age you hit that where you’re like, h, I can’t be bothered. Yeah. And that and and I I just think it’s sad that in society, I don’t mean to get deep, but how they just act like you get to a certain age and we don’t need women of, you know, that it’s over. And it’s not. No, it’s everything. It’s everything. And and I feel like I’m I’m wiser. I’m sharper. I’m better friend, better sister, better friend, all of it. child, but all of it. Yeah. Yeah. I think we come into our own at this age and there’s so much to look forward to. Mhm. Leanne, I think Chuck Lur is the perfect producer for this project. He’s absolutely incredible. Can you talk about working with him in the collaboration process of uh bringing this show to life? Oh, my darling. He came to my house. He flew to my house in Knoxville, Tennessee, and sat on my back porch and held my grandbaby and asked me to do a television show. And I know my mouth was open. I could not believe Chuck Lori and I’ve loved all of his shows. I could not believe it. And it um and he when he came to me about the premise at first I was like, “Well, I don’t know. I mean, I’m not really divorced.” And I thought, I don’t want this based on my real life. That would be weird. And so it I do think it was brilliant what he came up with. And he said, “So many people can relate to this, Lyn, and they relate to your standup and I think it’s a perfect fit.” And I think he was right. Absolutely. Now, this show really lets you both be in total chaos in the best possible way, whether it’s uh whether it’s dating disasters or uh family meltdowns. What was the most part fun part of leaning into that beautiful messiness with these characters? You know, for me, it was in front of an audience, the magic that happened with her, like a a scene we had rehearsed a million times. Then all of a sudden, she was like, “It’s on.” I could see it in her eyes. She’s like, “Let’s go.” And I It was woo. It was fun. It was really fun. Couple of those fight scenes we had. Oh, they were fun. The fight scenes were fun. So fun. I’ve always loved scenes in the band. Yeah. When we’re in the band. We have a lot of bed scenes together. Yeah. And then in the car. I know. Just any scene with her. Yeah. It just was so fun. It was fun. Yes. And it’s fun to watch and and I love the chemistry that you guys have. This show’s amazing. Thank you guys so much for your time. Incredible job. Thank you, my darling. I’ve been doing pelvic floor exercises this whole time. I’m doing a big one right now. [Music]
