LOS ANGELES, Calif. (WCHS) — Popular Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney is set to portray former professional boxer and West Virginia native Christy Martin in a biopic, a report said.
Sweeney, who has made headlines in recent weeks following her involvement in an American Eagle advertisement campaign, will portray Martin in a future untitled film, according to Hollywood news site Deadline.
Nicknamed “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” Martin rose to fame in the 90s as one of the best female boxers in the sport. She competed from 1989-2012 and held the WBC female super welterweight title in 2009.
The Mullens, W.Va., native was the first female boxer elected to the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and later the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, which was the first year that women were on the ballot.
The 27-year-old Sweeney is coming off “Anyone But You” and “Immaculate.” She’s been the focus of internet debates recently following an American Eagle ad that said “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”
