Prince Harry has lifted the lid on his departure from the Royal Family, as he revealed how the actions of the institution had his wife Meghan Markle in ‘floods of tears’ following their shock exit.

Despite Prince Harry and his older brother Prince William previously appearing to have a close bond, a rift occurred following Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle, with the newlyweds struggling to adapt to the royal lifestyle.

In January 2020, the couple made the decision to step down as working royals, with their exit documented in their 2022 Netflix documentary.

Speaking in the docuseries, Harry spoke about the divide created between himself and his brother, noting that William is ‘on the institution’s side.’

‘It’s already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution,’ the father-of-two said.

Touching on the statement issued by the palace, which dismissed bullying claims, Harry confirmed he had never given permission for his name to be signed at the end of the statement.

‘I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother’s name squashing the story about him bullying us out of the family,’ Harry said, adding he ‘couldn’t believe it.’

‘No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that,’ he stated, ‘And I rang Meghan and I told her and she burst into floods of tears because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.’

Earlier in the year, Harry admitted he didn’t know how long his father, King Charles, wanted to reconcile with his family.

The Duke of Sussex lost a legal challenge over his security in the UK at the start of May, which confirmed he would not be given personal police protection following his exit from the royal family.

Speaking to BBC News following the verdict, Prince Harry said that while he wants a reconciliation, he’s not sure how long his father, who has cancer, has left to live.

‘Of course, [the Royal Family] will never forgive me for lots of things but… I would love reconciliation with my family, there’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,’ Harry said.

‘Life is precious. I don’t know how long my father has, he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff. It would be nice to reconcile.’
