Is Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new Netflix deal another humiliating blow? Royal expert explains
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have extended their Netflix deal. Now, that sounds like a pretty good piece of news for anyone who’s interested in the filming industry. However, as with all things Harry and Megan, this new deal with Netflix has its fair share of complications. Number one, insiders tell Page 6 that it is worth substantially less than the $und00 million contract that they previously signed with the streaming giant. Number two, the deal has actually been downgraded. Now, while Harry and Megan previously had what’s described as an overall contract with Netflix, which basically means that the streaming giant took care of everything from sign off on the projects to filming to production and so on. This new deal is described as a firstlook contract. What that means is that Harry and Megan will come up with the ideas for their projects. They’ll film them, they’ll produce them, they’ll do all of that stuff, and it’s up to Netflix to either thumbs up or thumbs down each individual series. Now, Harry and Megan do already have a number of different projects in the work with Netflix. The first of which is a holiday special of Megan’s rather divisive lifestyle show with Love, Megan. According to a statement released by Netflix and the couple’s Archwell production company, the series special is going to take a look at her decking the halls, not in her own Monteito home of course, but decking the halls of some home somewhere along with her friends, perhaps even a few celebrities. Chances are Mindy Kaling won’t be returning given the reprimand she got for referring to Megan as Megan Markle and not Meghan Sussex. But who knows who else Megan will pull out of the bag. Then they have a documentary in the works that is going to spotlight an orphanage in Uganda in an area that is still being impacted by the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Now, Prince Harry has a lasting connection to this region of the world, which began with his mother, Princess Diana, who did extensive work in Africa helping victims of AIDS and HIV during her life. A third project, which is an adaptation of Carly Fortune’s book, Meet Me at the Lake, has been in development for some time now. And this announcement prompted many fans to question where on earth it is. While Megan didn’t address that speculation whatsoever, she did release a statement voicing her pride at the extended deal. Megan’s personal brand, As ever, is also closely linked with Netflix, which is one of her business partners in The Endeavor. During her lifestyle show with Love Megan, she was seen touting a number of different products that her brand has since released. And she explained in a press release that they look forward to expanding the work that those two brands are going to do together. In a press release obtained by Page 6, Megan wrote, “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the AS ever brand. My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archwell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally and celebrates our shared vision. Meanwhile, Netflix’s chief content officer, Bella Baharia, said that the company is looking forward to being able to entertain their members along with Harry and Megan. So, Netflix is fully invested in the Sussex brand despite the fact that their past collaborations have had mixed results. While With Love Megan received a number of viewers in its first few episodes, a lot of people panned the series for being boring, with one person even describing it as the visual representation of a sleeping pill. Meanwhile, a documentary that Harry produced all about the secret world of glamorous professional polo was panned by critics largely because it featured Prince Harry barely at all with many insisting that the only reason they want to watch anything produced by the Sussex’s is to see the Sussex’s. Now, that’s in stark contrast to the documentary that Harry and Megan produced about themselves in which they did offer a very intimate glimpse inside their lives since leaving the royal family. That has thus far been their most successful project for Netflix, but it remains to be seen whether or not they’re going to open up the doors to them onto mansion ever again.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are extending their Netflix partnership, but we hear their new contract is “much” less than their previous “$100 million deal” with the streaming company. “It’s not much,” an insider told Page Six. “It’s no risk for Netflix but saves them both reputationally.” Royal expert Charlie Lankston is breaking down what the new deal means for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
