Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery Reveals Why He Quit Hollywood | E! News

Daker Montgomery is revealing why he escaped the upside down. The Stranger Things star explained the reason he took an extended hiatus from Hollywood after playing Billy Harrove on the Netflix series. Reflecting on the change the industry has undergone over the years, telling The Australian, the actor says, quote, “Traditional Hollywood stars existed because there was mystery. Social media has done away with that. That’s a large part of why I dropped off the map for the last few years.” He adds, quote, I’m not trying to compete with anyone else. I’m living my truth and hopefully being able to pay the rent while I’m doing it. Beyond regaining his privacy, the 30-year-old who starred alongside Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, and Noah Schnapp in Stranger Things emphasized his desire to reclaim his identity. He continues, quote, “I’ve given a piece of myself to every role I’ve played, and that’s largely why I’ve taken time off lately. There’s been a lot of personal reflection about what I want in my career. I’m trying to gain a bit more control over where and what I’m working on.” And though he won’t be starring in the upcoming final season of Stranger Things, Daker, whose new movie went up the hill in theaters August 15th, he’s looking forward to what the series end has in store, just like the rest of us. 1. Some people just want to be working actors without being “stars”. Others aren’t from LA or New York, which are the production centers, and don’t wanna be in those places after work is over. Different strokes for different folks. But he didn’t quit, he wanted to take time off and come back on his terms. 🤷‍♂️

    2. The star system is an outdated joke, studios no longer own actors and actors don't need to beon camera promoting films all the time when they have social media for it. We got writers, producers and directors who can do that.

    3. Agents require you to have social media and casting directors factor in your follower count. It’s ridiculous and has nothing to do with your skills as an actor.
