Hugh Grosvenor, godson to King Charles III, is reportedly in a quandary over whether to ask Prince Harry or William to be the godfather of his newborn daughter.
The Duke of Westminster and his wife, Olivia, celebrated the birth of their daughter Cosima on July 27, an event that likely delighted both Prince William, 44, and Harry, 40, who are among Hugh’s closest pals. However, it seems the birth has also sparked a significant conundrum for Hugh regarding who will take on the role of Cosima’s godfather.
As per The Times, Hugh and Olivia are navigating a “minefield” as they decide whether to bestow the honor upon Harry or William.

Although this hasn’t been officially confirmed, insiders close to the couple suggest that William has been selected given his ongoing presence in Hugh’s life.

William previously requested Hugh to be the godfather to his eldest son, Prince George, now 12. However, Hugh, who boasts an estimated wealth of $12 billion, is also the godfather to Harry’s six year old son, Prince Archie.
This connection could potentially sway him towards offering Harry the same position for his daughter Cosima.
Hugh and Olivia have not yet formally announced who the godparents of their daughter will be or when the christening will occur.
This isn’t the first instance where the relationship between William and Harry has affected Hugh’s family circumstances. Last year, William served as an usher at the duke’s wedding while Harry was absent.
Numerous theories have emerged attempting to explain his notable absence, with several pointing to his bitter rift with his elder sibling after the release of his tell-all book Spare the previous year.
Although Hugh never provided clarity on the allegations, he and his wife’s feelings regarding Harry and his spouse Meghan Markle’s non-appearance were disclosed by a mutual acquaintance of the siblings.

Speaking to The Times during that period, they revealed, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding.”
The duke has shared a bond with Harry and William dating back to their youth.
The Grosvenor clan maintains deep-rooted ties with the Royal household. Hugh assumed a significant position during King Charles III’s Coronation in 2023, bearing the Standards of the Quarterings of the Royal Arms and Standard of the Principality.
Hugh’s deceased father, Gerald Grosvenor, shared a tight friendship with King Charles, who subsequently became one of Hugh’s godparents after his 1990 birth.
Furthermore, Gerald’s surviving wife, Natalia, acts as godmother to Prince William, and in a mutual arrangement, the late Princess Diana was chosen as godmother to Gerald’s second child, Lady Edwina Grosvenor.
