Be it Kate Middleton or Duchess Sophie, nearly all of my favorite royal looks involve lemon yellow. Still, Meghan Markle’s recent Jenni Kayne separates (which include the now nearly sold out cashmere ‘Marina’ sweater, $445; $356, and the still in-stock pleated skirt, $395; $316) may take the cake.
No, this ensemble isn’t one of the many stylish choices worn by the Duchess of Sussex in season two of her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, which debuted today. Instead, she chose to wear it for a new sit-down interview with Emily Chang, host of The Circuit, a Bloomberg Originals series, in which she discusses everything from authenticity to royal protocol.
I’ll admit, I am partial to a skirt-sweater combo—especially, the pleated, midi variety—but in a vibrant hue like lemon yellow, it gives the timeless silhouettes a fresh and elevated panache. It’s also perfect for fall, where we’re already seeing a pivot from butter yellow to more of a limoncello-esque hue. Bottom line: It’s pretty eye-catching and a trend I’d definitely love to copy as we head into autumn, too.

As for Meghan’s choice to wear such a bold hue today, there is one additional (and royal-themed) note that dovetails with an insight about royal life she shared back in 2022: Specifically, the pressure to wear neutrals. In her Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which debuted nearly three years ago, Meghan opened up about her decision to rarely wear color during her time as a working royal: “There was thought in that,” she revealed.
The Duchess of Sussex continued on: “To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same color as Her Majesty [Queen Elizabeth] if there’s a group event. But then you also should never be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family. So I was like, ‘Well what’s a color that they’ll probably never wear? Camel? Beige? White?’”
The resulting sartorial decisions were evident in the royal engagements that followed. “It also was so I could just blend in,” she revealed. “Like, I’m not trying to stand out here.”
Clearly, times have changed since her departure from royal life. Today is her day! But also, she’s no longer beholden to royal protocol of the past. In other words, bring on the lemon yellow. (You can also shop her exact look below.)
