Alexander Payne, director of ‘The Holdovers,’ when asked about Gaza at Venice Film Festival: “Quite frankly, I feel a bit unprepared for that question. I’m here to judge and talk about cinema.”

    1. Yeah, no, sorry but that’s just not good enough. There’s nothing to think about, nothing to mull over, you’ve been asked to do the bare minimum and show support for an oppressed people in the middle of a holocaust. Why is this difficult?

Not prepared? You’ve had 2 years to figure out how you feel about it pal.

Ugghhhhh The Holdovers has become such a comfort watch for me, I love that movie so fucking much and tell anyone I can about it. This is so disappointing and yet not at all surprising. What a loser. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

I might be downvoted but I think this is unfair to him / anyone asked this question at a film junket

What does Gaza have to do with the festival? I don’t really see the point in asking him about it, what’s he gonna say some rote sentence?

Why are there so many people in the entertainment industry who either refuse to discuss the genocide and war at all or act like they don’t have an opinion on it when we all know they do? Why are these grown ass adults behaving like this?

Apart from giving spaces to cowards, what surprises me the most is that they continue to give space and platforms to rapists and pedophiles

I think it is usually wise to not overspeak when you’re not informed and it’s not your thing.

However, in this situation it’s very fucking easy to condemn genocide and crimes against humanity, and people in the ARTS who can’t do that really can’t be respected in their craft which deals with staging and enacting real and imagined HUMAN stories and issues, requiring an understanding of HUMANITY.

It’s really infuriating that condemning genocide gets conflated with being a well-read political expert. The nuance is conveniently gone.

It’s easy to comment on which side of a genocide you’re on. Are you unprepared because the people writing your checks needed to give you pr flash cards as well? Is PR from the money backing your work backing tax breaks and funding a war killing innocent Palestinians? You’re not prepared for that?

    11. free Palestine, but these questions are just fishing for headlines and clicks . it does nothing to help anyone and it’s just performative.
if I had to choose between saying some meaningless words on camera or keeping my career so I can make a difference and resources to the cause I would choose the latter

Transparently lame cop out. He’s intelligent enough to spit out a simple sentence summarizing his leanings. He didn’t answer because he’s afraid of alienating any Israeli sympathizers he does business with.
