I get that people always say GoT but I feel personally the quality of The 100 and to a lesser extent The Handmaids Tale had far worse final seasons

Edit: I wanted to get it right so I looked it up! According to Guinness World Records 2025:
>The **most in-demand TV show of the past year is still HBO’s *Game of Thrones*** with a score of 89.0x, as it is 89 times more popular than average. *Stranger Things* reigns the sci-fi drama category with 53.8x, while *13 Reasons Why* is the highest-rated teen drama on 16.1x. *Rick and Morty* takes the record for a sitcom with a demand rating of 47.0x and India’s *Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai* holds the soap opera category, rated 22.5x. *page 188*.
So just because the zeitgeist hates GoT doesn’t seem to be translating into its staying power.

GoT was so bad that nobody I know has ever rewatched it after the first viewing even years later, because you know all of the cool stuff in the earlier series is going to be cancelled out by what you know is coming.

GoT was bad the last few seasons so the ending was expected.
Lost was a better build up than GoT and stayed good until the FINAL EPISODE.
Sopranos ending was pretty anticlimactic as well.
I’m of the opinion that endings are almost universally bad in shows but it’s much worse when major plotlines go unanswered.

I think Sex Education had a horrendous last season.
They got rid of so many beloved characters and the thing that made the first two seasons great were nowhere to be seen. Ruby was the only reason I kept watching.

Lost and Battlestar Galactica felt unsatisfying, given they pushed religion into what I thought of as sci fy shows which could get away with the most outlandish sci fy resolutions. I dropped Manifest the moment I saw it going in the same direction.

The Game of Thrones not being culturally relevant anymore thing is just not actually true though.
It’s a frequently stated internet opinion that doesn’t actually translate to real life.
GoT remains one of the most streamed TV shows in the world even in 2025.
It is the single most streamed show on HBO Max.
House of the Dragon’s premiere was watched by 10 million people on day 1 alone. How is that anything other than cultural relevance?
9.3 million watched the season 1 finale of HotD and 8.9 million watched the season 2 finale. That’s a pretty damn good attachment rate.
The books still sell well too.
The box set is still in the top 10 on iTunes.
Ranked by online engagement, it is the #16 TV show in the world even now. Ahead of Severance, ahead of Stranger Things, ahead of The White Lotus, ahead of The Last of Us. Despite ending years ago.
There’s a new video game in the works too, which will no doubt sell millions.
People also used to confidently argue that Avatar had no cultural legacy too, before the sequel became the third highest grossing film of all time.
In real life, people are still watching GoT all the time.

The myth around GOT is that it went downhill as soon as the showrunners ran out of source material but thats just a flat out lie. They essentially skipped books 4&5 which was all massive buildup for the last two books that probably won’t be released. Major characters and plotlines were cut which ended up affecting the ending. A suspicious number of queer and POC characters were cut in general as well.

Not a great show, not a great ending, but I often think of 7th Heaven. It ran for 10 seasons and was meant to end then. The final episode of the 10th season (originally the series finale) had a bunch of returned cast members, had a lot of past references, was celebrated as being a big deal. At some point very late, they were told they were coming back for season 11. So they did that episode, but then not everyone returned to season 11, they added random characters, and the actual series finale was lackluster in comparison. (I mean, the whole show is goofy and bad. But they’d already wrapped up things once, only to have to turn around and do it again.)

Simply because of the disrespect that they showed fans.
You don’t bring a show back from a ten year hiatus with a movie literally funded by fans, and then from that you are able to write a fourth season, only to kill off one of the most beloved characters on the show.

While Game of Thrones takes the cake, Dexter deserves to be studied for not having one but two terrible endings, so much so that it was revived again.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Dexter: Resurrection and considering the fact that it’s getting multiple seasons, I’m hoping that Clyde Phillips (showrunner of OG Dexter seasons 1-4, New Blood and Resurrection) goes ahead with his planned ending of the og show had he stayed around.
