Yeah it is racist and stupid. The man is a superb actor and had some excellent material in the first movie, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for him in the sequel.
He argues James Bond could be any race, his background doesn’t explicitly mean he has to be white, but the background of Bruce Wayne for instance requires he be white because he comes from a legacy of wealth that hasn’t existed in the African American community up until this point and the character is motivated in part by white guilt.
It’s something Marc has spoken about more in depth on the Fatman On Batman podcast too.
Jim Gordon does not need to be a white man, nothing about his story dictates that, same with his daughter Barbara who becomes Batgirl, but that doesn’t apply to Nightwing (Romani descent) or Bruce’s son Damian (ME descent).

It kind of reminds me of something [Marc Bernardin](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/why-james-bond-should-be-black-but-batman-should-stay-white-1136282/) has spoken about that I had never considered before when it comes to race-blind casting, that the foundations of the character should be considered in a sensible way.
