Pablo Torre reports that the LA Clippers allegedly circumvented the NBA’s salary cap by paying player Kawhi Leonard $28 million through a now-bankrupt company owned by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer
this clip above isn’t from pablo’s podcast ( “pablo torre finds out”) where he originally broke the story, but his podcast episode from yesterday covers his findings

I bet this happens way more than people realise in all kinds of sports, the Clippers just so happened to get caught
Similar thing is happening in the Premier League (football/soccer) with Manchester City circumventing certain rules, one of them being that they paid their former manager Roberto Mancini millions of pounds to “consult” with a team in Abu Dhabi (home of the Man City owners) and lied about his actual salary

As a Clips fan, I was so disappointed when I first heard the news. There were rumors for years but I always believed we had some sort of integrity to not do this shit. It’s such a shitty feeling…

The patriots did the same thing to pay Brady with his company TB12

This happens on every team in every sports league, so it’s not very surprising.
Good on Pablo for digging up the dirt and bringing it to life. He’s the only real journalist remaining in sports media, the rest are just mouthpieces for the league or player agents who get to tweet out scoops two minutes before the public knows.

I’m glad he’s still going after these kinds of stories. After his podcast was licensed to The Athletic/NYT, I was worried they’d push him away from his investigative work. His expose on contract collusion and how the NFL’s players’ association was screwing players over should’ve gotten more attention.

“Circumvented” sounds so painful
