King Charles’s former butler, Grant Harrold, recently recalled a moment from the early days of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s romance that showed just how down-to-earth the couple really are — even during a private Valentine’s Day dinner.

Grant Harrold Recalls William and Kate’s Early Romance

Speaking at an event to promote his new book, “The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service,” Harrold explained, per Express, that William was known for his independence. “He was very independent,” Harrold said. “He didn’t like anyone doing anything for him.”

That independence, however, never stopped William from showing appreciation. According to Harrold, William and Kate made it a point to thank staff personally after meals or events. He recalled helping plan a Valentine’s Day dinner in 2007, shortly after the couple rekindled their romance following a brief split.

“I remember having all these notes of what to do. It was just the two of them, and it was really nice,” Harrold said. “It was quite special being the one who got to do this.”

Even though the dinner was romantic and intimate, Harrold said William and Kate went out of their way to engage with staff. “They interacted with me. They chatted with me. It was quite fun,” he remembered. “They thanked the chefs and staff straight after the meal. The nice thing about William and Kate, and Harry, is they always used to thank everybody. They would always come and find you and thank you for what you have done.”

Prince William and Princess Kate Step Out for New Engagement

Fast-forward to today, and the Prince and Princess of Wales continue to balance family life with royal duties. The couple is set to attend a major engagement in London on Thursday, September 4, at the Natural History Museum. Kate, the museum’s patron, will join William to tour the newly transformed gardens and meet children and young people involved in biodiversity projects.

The royals will be shown how technology is being used to advance conservation efforts and will take part in activities alongside schoolchildren, including a pond-dipping session. They will also meet students from Manchester who have been creating habitats through the National Education Nature Park programme.

Kate has long supported the museum’s Urban Nature Project, spending significant time there in 2021 during its early stages.
