Why Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder Wanted to Quit During Season 3 | E! News
Ian Summer Holder reveals why he almost quit The Vampire Diaries during season 3. The actor known for his role as Damon Salvatore on the hit CW show opens up about wanting to dive into more complex characters. In an excerpt from the upcoming book I Was Feeling Epic, an oral history of The Vampire Diaries, Ian admits he felt his character was being reduced to the love interest of co-star Nina Dobrev on the teen drama. Something that made him feel so frustrated to the point where he considered moving on during season 3. despite ultimately sticking around until the eighth and final season. He explained, “I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon. So much so that at one point I was sitting across from Julie in her office in Atlanta almost in tears. Actually, my eyes were quite misty and asked out of the show before continuing. I was so angry about it. I wanted off because I saw the writing on the wall. Damon was heading toward the love interest role. I was like, I’m in my early 30s. I’ve got a lot of this heat because of this show. I’m sure I could go find something that’s really cool and dark and edgy. Sharing he was worried they were going to turn him into a sappy character. He was unable to make the rash decision to leave the CW drama which ran from 2009 to 2017. Due to his contract and also some encouraging words from co-creator Julie Ple. He explained of her words at the time. Julie was like, “You’re not leaving the show. First of all, you’re one of the stars and one of the parts of the beating heart of the show. And two, you signed a six-year contract, so that’s not happening. and three, don’t worry, there has to be layers. He added, she said, “Dude, I get it. Damon cannot be a one-trick pony. This is a 100 episode arc of a man. There are ups and there are downs, and there are times when he’s the villain. There are times when he’s the hero. I had to trust in that process.” And trusting in the process paid off. As years later, Ian was reflecting fondly of his years on set. He wrote on Instagram in February 2022, “Holy, 5 years ago, on this day, we wrapped The Vampire Diaries forever. This journey has been truly incredible. And now look what we’ve been able to build together with you all. [Music]

I hated Elena character
During season three he was still with Nina. I doubt he would have left😂😂😂😂😂 We remember when Nina moaned Ian's name during the hot motel scene.
