In 1991, 7-year-old Mila fled Ukraine for the U.S. with $250 cash. “We got visas as refugees from antisemitism,” she recalls. Her family lived in a tiny LA apartment until she was discovered at a children’s beauty pageant. She became a citizen in 1991 but didn’t learn English until 8. Her first paycheck bought her parents a washing machine.
